There was a brief time when high-end laptops, like the the MacBook Pro automatically came with a large assortment of ports. Presumably this is because docks weren't necessarily popular yet, and buyers demanded something that could realistically replace a desktop computer. There was also more design space to work with, considering there was only so far you could compress a laptop with a platter-based hard drive.
