Unlike some other smart TV operating systems -- namely Google's Android TV -- Roku takes more of a closed-off approach to how it handles third-party applications in its Roku OS. The Linux-based platform does include a dedicated Roku Channel Store for browsing, downloading, and installing apps, but options are limited when it comes to the availability of non-streaming software.
