OnePlus 7 vs OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: Rumoured differences compared

OnePlus is due to announce the OnePlus 7, the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G at an event on 14 May.

We've compared the OnePlus 7 series in a separate feature, but here we are looking at how the standard OnePlus 7 compares to its predecessors - the OnePlus 6T and the OnePlus 6.

Should you upgrade? This is how they are expected to differ.

Price

The OnePlus 6 is available for just over £500, while the OnePlus 6T, which launched in the latter half of 2018, starts at £529.

It is not yet clear how much the OnePlus 7 will cost, though we don't expect it to be cheaper than the OnePlus 6T. We suspect starting prices will be around the £550 mark for the OnePlus 7, with the OnePlus 7 Pro adding a couple of extra hundred to that tag.

Design

  • OnePlus 6: 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.75mm, 177g
  • OnePlus 6T: 157.5 x 74.8 x 8.2mm, 185g
  • OnePlus 7: TBC

Both the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T feature a premium build quality with a metal frame and a glass front and rear, and the OnePlus 7 is expected to follow suit.

OnePlus reduced the notch on the OnePlus 6 to a tear-drop in the OnePlus 6T and it also swapped the rear fingerprint sensor for an in-display fingerprint sensor, both of which the OnePlus 7 is expected to offer.

On the rear, both the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T have a dual camera in a vertical arrangement, which the OnePlus 7 is also expected to feature. It's claimed a triple rear camera will be reserved for the OnePlus 7 Pro model.

Neither the OnePlus 6 or 6T have an official waterproof rating, but it is not yet clear if the OnePlus 7 will change this. Based on the rumours though, the OnePlus 7 will look very similar in terms of design to the OnePlus 6T, with a few welcomed differences to the OnePlus 6.

Display

  • OnePlus 6: 6.28-inch, Optic AMOLED, 2280 x 1080, 19:9
  • OnePlus 6T: 6.41-inch, Optic AMOLED, 2340 x 1080, 19.5:9
  • OnePlus 7: 6.41-inch, Optic AMOLED, 2340 x 1080, 19.5:9

The OnePlus 6 and 6T both have OLED displays, which the OnePlus 7 is also expected to do. Based on the rumours, the OnePlus 7 will feature the same screen as the OnePlus 6T with a water-drop notch at the top and a slight increase in size and resolution over the OnePlus 6.

The OnePlus 6T stuck with a Full HD+ resolution, like the OnePlus 6, which the OnePlus 7 is also expected to do. Rumour has it the OnePlus 7 Pro model will opt for a dual-edged display and a Quad HD+ resolution though, along with a 90Hz refresh rate.

It is not yet clear if the OnePlus 7 will also have a 90Hz refresh rate compared to the 60Hz rate of the OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 6.

Camera

  • OnePlus 6: Dual rear (16MP + 20MP), 16MP front
  • OnePlus 6T: Dual rear (16MP + 20MP), 16MP front
  • OnePlus 7: Dual rear

The OnePlus 6 and 6T both have a dual rear camera with a 16-megapixel main sensor and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor. Both sensors have phase detection autofocus and an aperture of f/1.7. The main sensor also has optical image stabilisation.

On the front, both the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T have a 16-megapixel front camera with fixed autofocus and an aperture of f/2.0.

Details on the OnePlus 7's cameras have yet to be revealed in leaks, though it is claimed the OnePlus 7 will have a dual rear camera. It is not yet known if it will feature the same specifications as its predecessors, but we'd expect software improvements if nothing else.

Hardware and software

  • OnePlus 6: SD845, 6/8GB RAM, 64/128/256GB storage, 3300mAh
  • OnePlus 6T: SD845, 6/8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage, 3700mAh
  • OnePlus 7: SD855

The OnePlus 6 and 6T both run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, supported by either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The OnePlus 6 comes in a 64GB storage option, along with 128GB and 256GB, while the OnePlus 6T only offers the two larger capacities.

While rumours are currently thin on the ground as to what hardware the OnePlus 7 will offer, it's pretty much a given that it will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. We're expecting at least the same RAM and storage as the OnePlus 6T, but it wouldn't be surprising to see a larger capacity too.

In terms of battery, neither the OnePlus 6 or 6T offer wireless charging and the OnePlus 7 isn't expected to either. The 6 and 6T do both have fast charging too, which we fully expect to see on the OnePlus 7.

The OnePlus 6T has a 3700mAh battery compared to the OnePlus 6's 3300mAh, so we'd expect to see around the same as the OnePlus 6T for the OnePlus 7.

The OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T both run on Oxygen OS based on Android, which the OnePlus 7 will also no doubt run on, delivering the same user experience.

Conclusion

For now, nothing is confirmed for the OnePlus 7 but based on the rumours, it looks like it will be very similar to the OnePlus 6T with a few hardware upgrades. The OnePlus 7 Pro is expected to be the more exciting device, with a pop-up front camera and triple rear camera.

We'll update this feature as the official details are revealed, but you can head to our OnePlus 7 rumour round up feature for all the latest news in the meantime.
